TUNNEL VISION

Polytunnels are on the march. Primarily used to grow strawberries, they are now increasingly in use across the Kentish countryside. They allow soft fruit to be grown out of season, in ever greater quantities and at ever lower cost. Traditional orchards growing apples and pears continue to be grubbed to be replaced by oceans of plastic, changing the face of the landscape. As well as the visual impact, there also questions about the environmental impact of this new technology, particularly the increased risk of localised flooding and the demands they make on water supplies.
